A huge shout-out to Erma Siegel Elementary in Murfreesboro City Schools! Erma Siegel has made teaching and re-teaching their school-wide expectations a major priority. Marty Page, who teaches 3rd grade at Erma Siegel shared some insight about their plan for re-teaching expectations throughout the year. Here is what she had to say: “The 3R’s- Respect, Responsibility, and the Right Thing. Those are the building blocks of Erma Siegel Elementary. The lesson plans, created by our RTI2-B committee, are an important way to consistently teach all students the behavioral expectations in all locations throughout the school. At the start of each school year, teachers use the plans to model and teach the 3R’s to their students. During the first week of school, you may see students with their backpacks on at 9:00 am, learning what the hallways should look and sound like during morning arrival and dismissal. Bathroom expectations are practiced, as well as what behaviors are expected to be seen in the cafeteria and on the playground. Teachers use a checklist to ensure the plans were taught consistently the first week back. We also have the teachers reteach the plans the first week back after fall break, winter break, and spring break just to remind the students of how they are expected to behave. We may even touch on them again the last few days before winter break or even closer to the end of school! The important rule of thumb - teach as needed! The expectations are posted in the classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, recess areas, and cafeteria. There are constant reminders for the children wherever they are within the building. Teachers are also encouraged to reteach the expectations during class meetings, again - as needed. The faculty and staff at ESE are reaping the rewards of explicitly teaching, re-teaching, modeling, and recognizing the behavior expectations at ESE.”

Tips for Re-Teaching and Reinforcing Expectations
We tend to be really focused on teaching and reinforcing the behavioral expectations at the start of the school year, but then lose focus on this as the months pass by. However, it is important to keep revisiting the expectations throughout the year to really help students master the expected behaviors. Just as we teach and review academic topics, we need to do the same with behavior. So here are a few ideas for re-teaching and reinforcing behavioral expectations throughout the school year:
  • Have a team of students help teach the behavioral expectations to new students who transition into the school throughout the year.
  • Have monthly or bi-weekly announcements/videos reminding students of the different expectations in the different school settings.
  • Remember to continue using behavior-specific praise when students exhibit behaviors that align with the expectations. If your school uses tickets or points, continue to pair delivery of the tickets or points with behavior-specific praise.
